As many of you may already know Jessica will be leaving SAMP at the end of October to pursue some other opportunities.
Jessica has been with Copyright since before the GCA move from London and has worked in both US Copyright and GCA roles. Needles to say her knowledge, experience and general goodwill is going to be greatly missed around here.

Please join in wishing her farewell at some point over the next few weeks by possibly letting the air out of her tires, causing her to slip on a banana peel in the kitchen, habanero peppering or whatever way you see fit.

a goal. for 2011, realistically.

quit my day job, have a part timer and sew for the rest. wake up early, sans alarm clock, and walk George to start the day. drink coffee, read and write and begin my day.
the day is full of challenging but rewarding work, and im sure 2 or 3 evenings I will end my day waiting tables...til I really get on my feet. this is my realistic goal, after all.
these days will be different. no day will require the same mundane existence, such as data entry in an office from 9 to 5:30 with an hour for lunch under florescent lights and cubicle neighbors with slightly annoying daily habits. some days won't be awesome, but most will be good and more than ok. i will enjoy life and become more patient since I will have my days to get things done and not have a 6pm to bedtime window or just the weekend to complete my necessary life tasks, squeezing in some fun here and there. my garden will flourish. i will cook more meals and take photos of them for my future food blog. i will get back into food. i won't be afraid to dive into the challenges that once scared me, getting my feet wet every step if the way.
a challenge will be to let things happen and not try to control what life is about to toss my way. live for the moment, not for tomorrow.

i found a really awesome simple, old, soft, worn out leather coin pouch at the flea market this weekend and it reminded me that I had gotten a really old travel wardrobe carrier thingy made of old worn leather at the goodwill to use for it's supple leather. oh yeh, i said supple.
i thought I would experiment on my machine since I hadn't tried my had at leather yet...it wasn't so bad, but had it been any thicker, it might have caused problems.
here's the result. a simple little pouch. (will post the flea mkt find later)
i'm thinking hip pouches out of this will be nice.

i really love the packaging for forest milk, and i bet the milk is delicious out of that nice glass bottle. i wish we all had more access to things like forest milk, for multiple reasons.

here's what i found:
"The cows which produce this milk are free to roam an unused forest all year round. The milk is supposed to taste better, the theory being that happy cows produce better milk. We like the way the tree graphic reflects the typography as well as the simple yet charming addition of tissue paper covering the bottle cap. Nominated for a Japanese 2009 Good Design Award."

this is by far the most favorite of any collection i have going, and i have alot of collections.
i don't know what it is about these metal pieces of history that bring me that warm-hearted 'love' feeling, outside of their beauty and functionality, but I would go great lengths to make my collection grow.

DAY 3, 4 & 5: raw milk & demolition

DAY 3: yesterday, i would have murdered someone for a god damned burrito. it was a good test of will though---watched T eat Baja Burrito and later offered to go pick up a pizza for the hard-workin boys and smell it in the car all the way home. damn. that. was. hard.

however, today, i actually feel really great and satisfied with the milk and fiber drink.

DAY 4: back to the real job and taking a break from demolition. seeing as my favorite pastime at work is to rummage the fridge and snack all day, it was way harder than DAY 3. i had no floor-sanding or errand running to keep me busy.

DAY 5: well, it's only 9:22 am this Thursday morning and the true test will be tonight at Imogene + Willie while working the taco truck. no cold beers or 'icepicks' to keep me refreshed while slingin hot tacos in the sweltering RV, where frying fish raises the tempurature a good 10 degrees. no sneaking in a quinoa taco here, a piece of fish there.....

as far as demolition goes, my sweet Ben: makeshift contractor and wayfaring buddy--is gone and Im left to my own devices. he did all the hard work...knocked down the wall, placed the cedar beams, did some awesome support work in the attic, rearranged and improved electricity, helped me rip the floors and get most of the gunk off...now i just need to finish sanding, seal, put up some trim and voila! easy.........easy?
thank you Ben, whatever country you are in at the moment...I wouldn't have done it without you. i toast a large glass of milk to you.

i get really down when i think about my MeMaw Cheatham. she died when i was in 4th grade of Leukemia, before i ever got the chance to really appreciate who she was, and how much of her lived inside me.
days spent with her were never without a pad of good paper and chalk pastels. she would always sit me down and draw something out for me, then i would add all the color. or she would let me pummel through her train cases of make up and jewelry. or rummage through her closet stuffed full of amazing garments that i was too young to covet and realize how cool of a style she had.
she had this really awesome Cajun-French accent and she was pretty reserved and modest--the complete opposite of me and my dad...don't know where we got our boistrous ass-holiness..

i could sum up their house in many words:
art. french onion dip. garden. national geographic. golf clubs. croquet. mardi gras beads. quirky magnets. crochet'd everything. king cake. organ. bee stings. learning.

i miss her so much and wish that i could go back, knowing the things i know now and really hang out with her. pick her brain. learn more. when i think back, i was probably such a little shit and took her existence for granted. i guess you always do.
i feel that i got to sink in the life of MeMaw Branche a little more. and i got to spend a weekend with her 1 month before she passed, for which i will always be grateful, but of course, is never enough. i want more of both of them, in the real.

so, pretty soon the orange bicycle will be on the backburner and new interests will take over. i'm over the crazy busy print-whore mass produced style fabrics. i don't desire to bare these fabrics myself so why am i making things with them? i just wanted to sell? i suppose. anyone can buy some etsuko furuya fabric and make a bag, a pouch, a "______". right?
so now, i have to be a good seamstress. pay attention to detail and not let the busy fabrics hide the lack of creativity.
natural. used. flawed. unisex. old. battered. loved. story-filled. original. classic is what i crave.
i want to make what i myself would desire to retrieve.

email from Bobby, re: 1st Floor dishwasher.

FYI

We have just replaced a DISHWASHER in the Admin bldg. The dishwasher is designed to wash and sanitize your plates, utensils, etc. It is NOT a DISPOSAL.

The reason we replaced the dishwasher is the food particles that were not cleaned off the plates clogged up the drain line and therefore burned up the pump motor. No pump, no drain, no dishwasher! You get the picture.

Everything is okay. No one got hurt. Damage control was done and everything is back in working order and there is joy in Mudville again!

However, may I suggest that you scrape your plates in the FOOD DISPOSAL after eating; rinse the plates in the SINK; and then place them in the DISHWASHER. This may prevent down time for repairs and/or replacement and not to mention the cost of a new machine.

I know this email sounds WISHY WASHY, but it's really just FOOD for thought. Hopefully, the message will SINK in and everyone will enjoy the many things that Sony provides for us.

I recently received a parking ticket in one of the Hillsboro Village parking lots. I wasn't aware that we had to pay for parking in these lots, b/c I'm a classic absent-minded over-looker of such things i suppose, but now I know. Anyhow, the ticket offered a dispute option if you went to the website, so I obliged and emailed a friendly "..it was an honest mistake, but I understand..." email to the provided dispute contact.
With low hopes, I was pleasantly surprised to receive this email the very next day:

Ms. Cheatham,

Thank you for contacting me, and of course I will void your violation. It would be a privilege especially because I believe that earning your future business is more important than punishing you for an honest mistake.

Of course, when I honor a patron's dispute, I sometimes ask a favor in return .... #9 - I don't really mind the free coffee here. I think I drink too much of it.

i don't mind it every once in a while. i guess i have to come to the conclusion that even though Im not a fan of snobs, i think i could have slight snobbery over my caffeine and cheese intake. i love cheese. have i ever expressed the utmost passion i have for this cow/goat-teet treat? i would quit my job and go work in the cheese deli at whols foods if i had a little more knowledge and thought they were hiring. fuck that--i'd move to the greatest cheeseland of all, out of this country and apprentice with the best cheese makers there are. me queso, su queso.

#10 - You are a sewing goddess.

that is really an extravagant exaggeratory lovely comment. a goddess...ok. i'll take it. but one thing i can't do?....maintenance my machine. ahh, you should have heard the cussing drifting harshly out of the studio last night. so...my gentleman friend got into a bicycle accident, broke his hip in 3 places and is without insurance.
His Baptist Hospital experience consisted of an ER visit, surgery with a bad-ass Dr. Kurtz, 2.5 day stay in the geriatric-filled joint-replacement wing of the hospital, lots of pain medication and physical therapy.
The future holds multiple follow-up x-rays, physical therapy sessions, pain medication and Dr.'s visits.
Can you say "$$$CH..CHING$$$?" That's alotta 'bones'. (pun intended)

Looney and I, wandering (driving) late night in search of a tasty martini found ourselves at The Hermitage Hotel. According to her, their martini's are the "ess aich I t" and the experience to boot.
So, we stumble down to the basement bar only to find them closing early per the cleaning people's toxic carpet-cleaning fumes.

Bartender: "You're welcome to enjoy you're beverage by the fire in the lobby."
Looney: "That sounds great."
Me: "Giddy-up."

So, after taking a tour of the Gentleman's amazing bathroom swaddled in black and jadeite marble, jadeite urinals and shiny black shoe-shining chairs, we hit the floor face to face with the toasty fire, martini's in hand.
A combination of our chats, the delicious martini with hand-stuffed bleu cheese olives, the warmth, one of the most beautiful lobby's I'd ever seen, the dim fire light, and the presence of my dear friend Katherine made it one of the most enjoyable late evenings I have had in quite the while.
Thanks, Lady...I needed that.

there's something really romantic about ritual. my daily living seems to bring an assortment of giddy excitement & quirky instances with a side of uninteresting craziness, disarray and UNorganization...so much so, that I'm now forcing myself to aquire a daily enjoyment in some shape or form...anything--big, small, mundane or meaningful. a ritual. morning tea. 10 minutes of reading. create atleast one thing everyday. anything.
so, goals: find something that brings me pleasure and do it once everyday. more specifically, something that makes me slow down, soak in my surroundings and remember all the beauty and repulsion that this life, daily, will throw in my face. appreciate it. good and bad.

specific goals:
be mindful, wake up earlier, drink more tea, stretch frequently, read-not in bed, make something daily, adopt a responsible habit (financial organization), get UNcomfortable.
starting now.

well. i haven't been sewing shit these past few weeks. the dog days of summer have brought out a mysterious party monster that apparently requires no sleep, excercise or fresh fruits/veggies. i didn't know i had it in me. seriously, biggest bender ever.
it's been too hot in the studio and i've been too busy being sucked in...in to what? you ask... just too much fun, i suppose.
but--i have been back into my old stock of 120mm film cameras, and i have alot to show for it. so, maybe a little etsy side project?
